What you need to know about Samsung’s latest Ultra-branded smartphone
The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, a titanium-clad behemoth with a ton of new capabilities enabled by Samsung’s freshly released Galaxy AI system, has arrived. It also adds camera, performance, and display advancements.
There’s no argument that the Galaxy S24 Ultra is still the top Galaxy S24 series, even as the cheaper devices in the line-up get some upgrades of their own. However, some of the S24 Ultra’s specs are still very similar to what the Galaxy S23 Ultra offers, although perhaps through further use more of a performance gap will appear between the new device and last year’s.
Have a read of our Galaxy S24 Ultra hands-on review if you’d like our early opinion of how this phone feels and works. But here, we’ll take you through all the key spec and facts about the Galaxy S24 Ultra so you can learn exactly what the new Ultra Samsung phone’s all about.
SAMSUNG GALAXY S24 ULTRA SPECS
SAMSUNG GALAXY S24 ULTRA PRICE AND RELEASE DATE
Pre-orders for the Galaxy S24 Ultra are available starting on January 17 globally. The device will go on sale on January 31. You will also need to pay $1,299/£1,249 for the phone’s basic 256GB version in order to obtain one.
The S24 Ultra is slightly more expensive than the Galaxy S23 Ultra at launch this year due to the U.S. pricing. However, after reading about the improvements, you might conclude that Samsung has good reason to increase the price.
SAMSUNG GALAXY S24 ULTRA DESIGN AND DISPLAY
Although the Galaxy S24 Ultra and Galaxy S23 Ultra may appear identical at first glance, the new phone differs in a few key ways. For instance, the side rails are now composed of titanium, which results in a stronger, lighter design with an opulent appearance. In addition, the S Pen stylus has been somewhat modified with a flat, clicky top.
Additionally, you might notice that the screen has less curvature than it did previously and has thinner bezels, giving you a larger usable screen area. To be more precise, it’s a 6.8-inch OLED panel that has an improved rated brightness of 2,600 nits and a QHD resolution and refresh rate of 1 to 120 Hz, just like the Galaxy S23 Ultra.
The Galaxy S24 Ultra, like Samsung’s Galaxy S phones from previous years, has an IP68 dust and water resistance classification. However, the new Gorilla Armor hardened glass, which is now only available on the S24 Ultra, is helping to raise the bar for its toughness. It promises to minimize reflection by 75% to make it easier to read the screen in strong light and to be four times more scratch-resistant than earlier toughened glass.
Titanium Gray, Titanium Black, Titanium Violet, and Titanium Yellow are the four standard color options available. Titanium Orange, Titanium Green, and Titanium Blue are available exclusively through Samsung.
SAMSUNG GALAXY S24 ULTRA PERFORMANCE
All global versions of the Galaxy S24 Ultra will come with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy processor. The new processor should result in enhanced ray tracing for gaming as well as more powerful and efficient performance. Based on the test results we saw with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy chip in the Galaxy S23 Ultra, we might even see better performance than other flagship Android phones powered by the Snapdragon in this “For Galaxy” version of the chip.
Samsung has maintained the standard 256GB of storage on the Galaxy S24 Ultra while increasing the RAM to 12GB by default. You may even purchase a phone with 512GB or 1TB of storage if you’re willing to pay more.
SAMSUNG GALAXY S24 ULTRA CAMERAS
A 200MP primary camera, a 12MP ultrawide camera, a 10MP 3x telephoto camera, a 12MP selfie camera, and a new 50MP 5x telephoto camera make up the Galaxy S24 Ultra’s camera loadout. With the exception of the 50MP telephoto, all of these sensors seem to be identical to those on the Galaxy S23 Ultra.
Samsung claims that because of its greater quality, the new 5x lens would still provide lossless 10x zoom, even if the Galaxy S23 Ultra featured a 10x zoom lens.
Beyond just changing one sensor, other enhancements have been made to photography. Better “Nightography” low-light photography, Super HDR compatibility for the Camera, Gallery, and Instagram apps, and several new AI features like automatic photo remastering and reflection reduction are just a few of the features Samsung is promoting.
The most significant AI improvement for images captured by the Galaxy S24 Ultra may be its generative editing feature, which allows you to reposition subjects within an image or enlarge its boundaries to correct shots that are too close to the subject or at an angle. To ensure that no one is duped into believing that any changes made by AI are real, these are watermarked.
With a single long tap on any video in your Gallery, you can instantly slow down and smooth out your current clips with the Galaxy S24 Ultra’s unique AI-powered function, instant slo-mo.
SAMSUNG GALAXY S24 ULTRA: SOFTWARE
The Galaxy S24 series comes pre-installed with Android 14, which is topped with Samsung’s One UI 6.1 interface. The fact that Samsung has guaranteed the Galaxy S24 series will receive complete updates for seven years is more significant than this, though. That is tied with Google for the most years that a phone manufacturer offers, which makes the S24 a compelling option for long-term customers.
SAMSUNG GALAXY S24 ULTRA: BATTERY AND CHARGING
The Galaxy S24 Ultra, like the previous several generations of Samsung Ultra phones, comes with a 5,000 mAh battery. We continue to expect that Samsung will be able to enhance the Galaxy S23 Ultra’s already impressive battery life with this new model, thanks to the efficiency gains of the new chip.
The Galaxy S24 Ultra also retains the 45W wired and 15W wireless charging capabilities of the Galaxy S23 Ultra. Even with a suitable charger, Samsung claims a 65% charge in 30 minutes, which is still a little slower than we’d prefer.
SAMSUNG GALAXY S24 ULTRA: GALAXY AI FEATURES
Samsung’s Galaxy S24 series is centered around Galaxy AI and its capabilities, which offer remarkable versatility in terms of situations in which they can be useful. Although we have already discussed the elements linked to photography, there are still many more to explore.
To start, real-time text and in-call translation for 13 languages is available (more will be added after launch), which should make phone conversations with individuals overseas considerably simpler. Additionally, translation can be utilized to generate artificial intelligence summaries of text, as in the Notes app, or while utilizing Samsung Internet’s Browser Assist to swiftly browse through internet content
The Chat Assist feature is tucked away in the keyboard of the Galaxy S24. In addition to reviewing your work for spelling errors, it can also assess the tone of your writing and offer alternative wording options to make your message seem more serious.
Like a number of other S24 series apps, the Voice Recorder app may generate summaries. However, it can now recognize up to 20 speakers, which greatly simplifies the reading and comprehension of lengthy transcripts.
While this is going on, you can rearrange your musings and thoughts that you’ve recorded in the Samsung Notes app so that they make more sense to you or to someone else who is reading back on them. Additionally, Notes can help you write more neatly if you’ve been using the S Pen to write handwritten notes.
the Circle to Search is one more significant feature. You can always hold down the home button, use your finger or a S Pen to draw something on the screen, and then use that drawing to receive Google Search results. The AI can then assist you in utilizing the newly acquired knowledge by answering follow-up questions or helping you learn more about a certain subject.
SAMSUNG GALAXY S24 ULTRA: OUTLOOK
The majority of Samsung’s improvements for the Galaxy S24 Ultra are hidden from view, but there are enough to make the phone worthwhile. The minority of phone consumers who are interested in photography should find the new telephoto camera appealing, and power users and mobile gamers will be pleased with the enhanced RAM and new CPU. Additionally, the brighter screen and flatter design with titanium sides should give everyone the impression that they are handling a high-quality product.
It’s difficult to predict, though, if Samsung’s large AI wager will be profitable. It’s undoubtedly a significant challenge to Google’s hegemony in smartphone intelligence, and Galaxy AI’s vast app store is amazing. However, it’s unclear as of now whether this would draw in the typical smartphone customer or if it will only be a lot of attention and marketing aimed at a narrow market. The answer to that will only become clear with greater usage of these phones.
